The mission of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is the elimination of cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and death.  The Center conducts research of the highest standards to improve prevention and treatment of cancer and related diseases.

The Shore Run/Walk benefits the Early Detection Initiative for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In 2007, the Shore Run/Walk raised more than $170,000 for Early Detection."

Early detection and intervention research seeks to identify markers in blood and other bodily fluids that foretell the risk, presence and prognosis of cancer and related diseases.  The aim of early detection and intervention is to improve the survival and quality of life for cancer patients through the development of new technologies for the earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment of cancer.  Statistics show that early detection is crucial.  For many common cancers, when the disease is caught early, nine out of 10 cancer patients can be saved.  Unfortunately, tens of thousands of people each year are diagnosed with advanced cancer, and all too often they face painful treatments and poor chances of survival.

Friends of the Hutch, an all-volunteer organization, produces and manages the Shore Run/Walk to benefit Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. All proceeds from the event go the Cancer Center. The 45 members of FOH and another 50 volunteers they recruit insure the success of the race every year. For more information, contact Judy Curran, Race Coordinator at shorerun@live.com. All Shore Run/Walk entry fee checks and donations should be made out to FHCRC.
